RACE DAY RECAP

A really difficult day for the Freightliner Racing crew, after making up a number of positions yesterday it looked like Fabian and Luke had the same task ahead of them today. The duo made up a couple of spots during the race but traffic was tough on the streets of the Gold Coast. Finishing in 13th position is no reflection of what the team is capable of, and statistics show this is the first time a Gold Coast race winner has come from outside the top six, confirming that qualifying here is crucial. The event crowd at the Gold Coast was a record breaker with just under 200,000 people in attendance over the weekend. The attention now turns to the Pukekohe race meeting in Auckland, the team having a matter of days to return the cars to Albury, complete repairs then ship them across the pond!

Brad Jones

“I felt if we had of got out in front of Frosty in one of the pit stops it would have given then guys some good clean air but the truth is he was stuck in traffic all day.”

“We probably missed a trick with the safety car. I bet most wish they had stopped later during the safety car period like James Courtney did, just before the race went green again.”

THE DRIVERS WORD

Luke Youlden

“It was a constant battle out there today. The car didn’t work well enough for us on the hards and that’s where we focused on making changes overnight as we knew that is where we were lacking.”

“It just didn’t work out for us today, qualifying was tough and I don’t feel like either of us made a lot of gains in our stints in the car during today’s race.”

“I’m not sure if the fuel strategy could have been a little different but it seems like everyone was put out by the safety car and timings were therefore affected.”
