News // FABIAN LUCKS OUT AT PERTH

Wrong time, wrong place: that is the story of Fabian Coulthard's day at Barbagallo Raceway today in which he qualified seventh and finished 15th.

The Lockwood Racing driver was the first to put slick tyres on in this morning's qualifying session as the track dried. He held the fastest time until the rest of the field caught on and came out with newer rubber, dropping him to seventh.

In the race Coulthard was looking strong for podium until his pit stop on lap 28 when he was released into the path of a Jack Daniel's Racing car. That led to a drive-through penalty, which relegated him to 18th. He recovered to finish 15th at the chequered flag.

Qualifying for the first of tomorrow's two 50-lap races starts at 9.25.

"I think we just timed it wrong in qualifying. I sat in the garage and got asked whether it was the right time to put slicks on. It was a line ball thing but I thought not. We took a gamble anyway and went fastest on the drying track. If it had started raining then, which it looked like it might, we would have looked like legends but unfortunately we didn't get the best run and missed out.

"If it wasn't for that drive-through penalty I would have been on the podium I'm sure.
The car's pretty good; I'm not too fazed with the speed that it's got and I'm confident that, given the opportunity, we can get a result.

"V8 Supercars is such a competitive sport that when your car's quick you've got to capitalise on it and we didn't do that today"
